Marooned on the Isle of Lesbos

The yosi group and I found ourselves in a whole-in-the-wall inuman place.  It was small and bordered on being dingy; the music was so pumped up I that could barely hear the small talk of my seatmate. I ended up wondering: what in the world am I doing here?  Fact of the matter is, I don't drink.  I also abhor extremely noisy places.  But against my judgment, I still stuck out with the company.  It wouldn't hurt to get to know the people that I'm working with.

As I let my attention wander about, I overheard pretty Boss Lady recounting the state of her love life.  I couldn't quite make out the whole conversation because of the ambient noise.  All I could pick out were "boyfriend" and "girl."  I assumed it was another typical third-party sob story.

Then there was a sudden lull in the music, and I realized I assumed wrong.

"So ayun, nung hindi kami nung boyfriend ko, magkasama kami nung girl," she candidly admitted.

I stared at her with a surprised look, and proceeded to fall off my chair.

Blame it on my all-boys school upbringing, but I usually prefer the company of men than that to women.  No, silly, it's not because I wantonly crave like to have sex with guys.  It's just that I find it easier to relate with them.  Come to think of it, I can only count a very few girl-friends that I'm close with.  My guy friends probably outnumber them by a factor of four or more.

As with women from the island of Lesbos, I have even fewer friends.  I know in theory that they come in all sorts, from the extremely butch (I was recently introduced to an office mate, and I have a crush on her kasi she's so gwapo!), to the girly-girly type.  In theory, I should also be able to connect with them easily.  Unfortunately, it all remains theoretical. They're exotic creatures for me in real life. It's like, how am going to break ice with them? Do we talk about how a certain girl is pretty? I guess we could, but only because I can appreciate a pretty girl from an aesthetic point of view.  Do we talk about cars? No, wait, that's too butchy.  Even I can't relate with that. Do we talk how the subtle and not-so subtle stereotyping of the Filipino society towards people of a certain preference?  Oooops, wait, I'm also being a stereotyping jerk with my own behavior here.

Bad, bad, Ternie.

I have to whack myself in the head to remember that we're all the same joes, no matter what our preferences are.

Either that, or I really need to get out of my lungga and meet more people of ALL kinds ;)

-----
Side-ending to the story: after Boss Lady finished making kwento, she suddenly says across the table, "O, tapos na ang story ko! Ikaw, Ternie, do you want to share anything?"

I smiled sheepishly at her, and just shrugged my shoulders.

No, thanks, but my corporate closet is still quite roomy and comfy :P

  7. Lesbos probably think the same thing about gay guys. Soltero's comment made me cringe since I recently learned that I have lots of lesbian friends haha. They sorta came out all at once.

  8. I don't have lesbo friends.

    I have lesbo siblings.

    Hehe.

I guess that makes a difference because we're not close.

How are they? Is it hard making a connection with them?
